I know this book is a classic, and I know a lot of people love it.but frankly? My dear, I don't give a damn. ![]() I'm glad I read the book instead of seeing the movie, because I don't think I could handle watching her be a horrible person to Melly, the true hero of this story, nor could I watch pretty much any of the events that transpired in the last 100 pages of the book. But she never did! She'll think about that tomorrow. I thought I would be rooting for her, I thought I would want someone to love her back, but she was so misguided about her judgement about everyone - EVERYONE - that I just wanted her to find herself. Strong-willed and reasonably clever, sure. even when themselves were horrible.īut Scarlett O'Hara is the most selfish human being I have ever read about in my entire life. The voice was consistent throughout, and the characters were always true to themselves. But the other star is because, despite it being about a thousand pages too long (a literal thousand, I'm not being hyperbolic here), it was a reasonably well-written book, for its time. It is a book that I finished and therefore it gets a star. Here's the reason for my rating: One star is because you have to start with one star. It took me three months, at least as many breaks, including a slight delay when I left it in Vermont, and a lot of frustration, but I finished it!! ![]() Groundwork of the metaphysic of morals5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Bilingual editions are a very important enterprise, and Timmermann deserves the highest praise for introducing such an edition for English-speaking Kant research. Just as those who in principle can read Latin will be grateful to have a translation at hand that will help them through the text, readers of Kant’s Groundwork will be grateful to be provided an edition that allows them to compare the original text on the left side with its translation on the right, line by line … it is to be hoped that this book finds many readers, both in introductory and advanced classes. 'Jens Timmermann’s idea and effort to provide a German-English edition of Kant’s Groundwork cannot be applauded enough. Here we have German and English on facing pages and high reliability and fluency in the translation.' The constant need to refer to and fro between text and translation, with differing pagination and conventions, is over. ‘Anybody studying Kant's celebrated Groundwork will want to use Jens Timmermann's new facing-page edition. This is by far the best edition of the Groundwork for English-speaking students and scholars that has ever been produced.' On the left is the most authentic and accurate edition of Kant's original text currently available on the right is a respectfully revised version of Mary Gregor's canonical translation of the Groundwork that makes her fine work even more precise. ![]() There is nothing it is possible to think of anywhere in the world, or indeed anything at. ‘It has taken more than two centuries, but at last we have a bilingual edition of the most important work in modern moral philosophy. Text : Immanuel Kant: Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals (1785). ![]() ![]() Geertz, following Paul Ricoeur, suggested that “a” culture-any culture-is a complex assemblage of texts that constitutes a web of meanings. ![]() It is a perspective that was developed by Clifford Geertz as a response to the established objectivized ethnographic stance prevalent in anthropology at the time, and that calls for an epistemology (“culture as text”) and a writing methodology (“thick description”) that will allow an anthropologist to interpret a culture by understanding how the people within that culture are interpreting themselves and their own experiences. “Interpretive anthropology” refers to the specific approach to ethnographic writing and practice interrelated to (but distinct from) other perspectives that developed within sociocultural anthropology during the Cold War, the decolonization movement, and the war in Vietnam. ![]() You brought me the ocean dc5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Jake's life begins to outpace his small town's namesake, which doesn't make it any easier to come out to his mom, or Maria, or the world. However, it seemed to this listener that the music never changed to reflect the story presented. If this was the guiding principle behind the composition then Gyger was successful, as the music does sound like a kaleidoscope, pieces of coloured glass falling into space. Different settings of the kaleidoscope generate particular harmonic colours … The guiding metaphor for the music is one not found in the novel …In a kaleidoscope, small fragments of coloured glass fall into arbitrary relationships which are then mirrored geometrically to create the illusion of order. It was a complex plot and a very complex score that at times sounded completely random. ![]() Should one therefore also, before attending the opera, study the music of its composer Elliott Gyger to understand how and why the music was conceived? Had one not had the visual aspect and the text so wonderfully displayed on surtitles, hearing the music would not have given the listener the effect of what was transpiring. ![]() ![]() Oscar and Lucinda, Sydney Chamber Opera, Carriageworks. ![]() Tiny bj5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() It will likely take you 6 months or more to set up your Tiny Habits if you apply his Tiny Habits method to doing so. ![]() Even the most incompetent, lazy & weak willed human can declare victory. ![]() IMHO, it's the promotion of "wimp culture".Įmbarrassingly low standards will get you started, and you CAN claim 100% success on the smallest imaginable tasks. The spike through the Tiny Habits' heart is in the complete abdication of personal responsibility for one's own behavior.
